If you read last week’s Part 1 installment, you know that I’m having a look at my favorite behind-the-scenes utilities for flight simulator. These are the workhorses of ‘simming; programs that work their magic in the background and make every flight you take just a little bit better. This week, two more that I consider indispensable: Continue reading
Usually, I try to organize these Friday posts around a central theme. Today you get a grab-bag of random stuff that’s floating around my desk (and my brain). Prepare yourself. Continue reading

The AOPA is fond of saying it: of all the flights logged each day in the USA, the vast majority are small GA aircraft. And I’d be willing to bet good money that the bulk of those flights begin and end at small airports. So what do you know about your local aerodromes? Continue reading

What is FTX NA Blue? Aside from being a mouthful to say, Orbx’s latest scenery is a big patch of the Pacific Northwest, stretching from the California/Oregon border in the south, up into British Columbia to the north, and from the Cascade mountain range in the east to the Pacific Ocean. That’s a lot of ground, people. Flying in a GA craft, it’d take you many hours to go from top to bottom. Even in a fast jet, you could have a nice long flight without ever leaving the NA Blue boundaries.
Yesterday, pre-paying customers got the first crack at downloading the scenery. Were there problems? You betcha. By the way, who didn’t see that coming? I’ve seen virtually no releases of this massive size whose download has been flawless from the get-go. It’s just the nature of the internet. One of these days, we’ll have fat enough pipes to dump huge files into the world with ease (yeah, right), but for now it’s often a challenge. The good news is that things are going much, much better now. In fact, I was able to download the whole 4-gig-plus package mid-day today in about an hour, which I thought was pretty great.
But I digress… Continue reading
One of the things I love about flight simulator is how multi-faceted it is as an experience. Some use it for brushing up on real-world techniques, some for flying planes they’d never have a chance to even see, much less pilot, in “real life”, and some just enjoy exploring. Today, I thought we’d look at the virtual tourism aspect of FS, with an eye toward the city and region that will draw the world’s attention starting tonight. Continue reading

John Venema, the big cheese behind Orbx Simulation Systems, has just released a video blog entry featuring Twin Oaks and the fabulous new Sibwings Bird Dog. Both are still in beta, but as you can see, both are getting dangerously close to finished. Thanks, John!
Don’t forget to visit the YouTube page and watch it in full HD!

It’s been a quiet week in the FS world, release-wise. I guess we’re all still digesting the flurry of news from last week (and maybe enjoying our new toys, too). Still, quiet doesn’t mean silent. As I scoped out the various FS forums this week, a few fun things caught my eye. Here they are, in no particular order… Continue reading

Well that’s about par for the course, isn’t it? This was supposed to be posted yesterday, but life nosed ahead of it in line, and here it is Saturday afternoon. I like the alliteration so much, I’m going with it anyway…
Something evil is afoot. I’m sure you’ve seen it lately on your favorite FS forums—the bar-room brawls, pointless bickering, product-bashing, and just plain old grumpiness. I don’t know who slipped the mickey into our collective water supply, but it’s sucking the fun out of the hobby. That’s a damn shame too, ’cause there is a whole lot of really great stuff happening in the virtual aviation world, and we should be enjoying ourselves more than ever.
Rather than grumbling, I’ve decided it’s time for a party. That’s why I’m happy to announce Fanboy Fridays, a (hopefully) weekly love-fest where I blather on about the cool, the awesome, and the amazing new additions to flightsimming. All I ask is that you let me know what’s brought a smile to your face in FS this week, and that we all abide by the ONE RULE: enjoy ourselves. This is a hobby. It ought to be fun!
Here we go… Continue reading
